I received an E-ARC of this novel from the publisher through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book thrives in the shades of grey within the world and all of us. The urban fantasy world Kosoko Jackson has formed is equal parts alluring and horrifying. At its core, this is a story about grief and love and the ways traumatic events can pervert that love and turn it into consuming obsession. The mystery at the heart of this story is really compelling, and I didn’t see a lot of the twists it threw into the story coming.
I loved that the descriptions were crafted with an artist’s eye for detail, something that helped make Lewis’s point of view feel deeply lived-in. While I found the start a bit slow as we tried to make sense of this world within our own alongside Lewis, once the action picked up, I found this book unputdownable. This book levels up the horror potential I saw in the YA dark fantasy, The Forest Demands Its Due, without compromising the heart at the core of each of his books.
I love the way that Kosoko Jackson writes horror. The way he depicts devotion and corruption as two sides of the same coin is so compelling. His horror has so much heart to it, which makes it really easy to root for his characters, to want to see them succeed and survive. I can’t wait to see what this author does next.
