K. Ancrum describes this book as both the softest and cruelest book she’s ever written, and I can’t think of a better description for what she’s done with this story. Adam, Mine is a Frankenstein retelling, written in Kayla’s signature short-chaptered style. Every time I think there’s no way of topping the previous book Ancrum released, and every time she surprises me by finding new ways to create stories that feel like they’re seeing a part of my soul. I loved Victor and Elias’s story, and this book both broke and healed something in me. If you’re going into it expecting a queer love story where the scientist and his ‘monster’ fall in love, this is not the book for you. If you’re looking for a book that is queer to its marrow, and is a bittersweet exploration of the human capacity for anger, grief, loneliness, cruelty, but also joy, compassion, and forgiveness, you need to read this. This may have unseated Icarus as my favorite novel by this author. K. Ancrum is a master of deeply human stories that speak to and shine a light on the parts of us that life has battered, while never compromising an undercurrent of hope.
