Review: Even If We Break by Marieke Nijkamp (Released 09/15/2020)

The disability, neurodivergent, and trans/non-binary rep is where this book shines. As someone with EDS, the same chronic illness as Finn, I’ve never seen myself represented on the page.

I’ve never seen a character that’s been allowed to be a crutch user, and face the reality that he may eventually need a wheelchair, but also be smart, badass, and valued by his friends instead of being seen as a burden. I’ve never seen mobility devices used as an asset to the plot instead of a hindrance to everyone.

These may sound like bare minimum things but a lot of disability rep is written by able-bodied people who have no idea what it’s like to actually be disabled, and have no understanding that not all disabled people hate their disability all the time, and that while it’s part of them it isn’t all of them, but here, with this book written by a disabled author, the true experience of disability shines through.
