The Ancient Things is book three of the How to Survive Camping series, a horror series centered on camp manager, Kate, and the campground she runs. Each book is split into seasons with rules for surviving encounters with the supernatural, and blurbs about the land during that season, with chapters within each season focusing on encounters with specific creatures, where each book has one main antagonistic creature as the tying theme to the stories.
In book three, the consequences of the land turning ancient really start to catch up to Kate. This entry in the series stood out to me in the ways we learned more about Byron and his past, and about Kate’s brother and their childhood. While some aspects are starting to feel a bit repetitive at this point in the series, I’m still eagerly awaiting book four, and I think these make for fun, short, spooky reads. These novellas remind me somewhat of the tone of the podcast Welcome to Nightvale, though as the series has continued they’ve edged darker and darker. Overall, I had a fun time returning to the campground, and look forward to the next one!
