I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I absolutely devoured this. I’ve followed Kristen on social media for years, and have always appreciated her film reviews, especially those looking at the intersection of film and disability.
This was a great dive into disability representation throughout the history of film and the ways various films got it right or got it wrong. Every section was super engaging, and I never found myself having to push through to finish a chapter, unlike many other film-related non-fiction books I’ve read.
A must-read for any cinephile, and a must-read for anyone with an interest in disability representation in media or disability history. Kristen wove her lived experiences as a disabled person throughout the book seamlessly, while also being willing to acknowledge areas of disability that she didn’t have experience with, and deferring to the expertise of those living with the conditions being discussed in those segments.
