I received an E-ARC of this novel from the publisher through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
In What World follows Priscilla and Marlowe, two former high-school rivals and the stars of their theater program when they reunite sixteen years later to solve the mysterious disappearance of their mentor and beloved theater teacher, Dallas. Their search for answers gets them more than they bargained for when they find out that Dallas has gotten his secretive Memory Machine to finally work.
This book absolutely floored me. It’s equally a sweet, sometimes steamy, rom-com as Marlowe and Priscilla confront alternate versions of their lives and each other, as well as the truth of their past together, as it is a deep dive into the ways our pasts shape us, the ways grief changes us, and the power of stepping into your full self – damage and all – to take back control over your destiny. This is a love letter to theater and to queerness, and I’m so thankful to have gotten to spend some time alongside these characters. I didn’t want it to end because I was having so much fun diving deeper into them and their lives. I’ll definitely be eagerly seeking out Morrissey’s backlist titles after this.
